‘Muslim culture’ represents many distinct Muslim cultural groups such as the Asian Muslims, the Middle Eastern, the African, the European and the American Muslims, all of them with their own divergence in customs and traditions. Some customs and traditions may be more motivated by culture than by religion. Though, some aspects of their religion or culture are accepted by all Muslims of the world. Such as, Muslims believe in the Oneness of Lord, the Holy Books, and all Prophets from Adam to Muhammad (PBUH) without discrimination, and the Day of Judgment. If we consider Cultural commonalty it includes giving charity, an expectation to maintain a balance between responsibility to the Creator and to their fellow man, and focusing particularly on the care, love, and respect for the elderly and younger. Islam is also seen as an all-comprehensive way of life relatively strict exclusive religious code because of its focus on balancing personal and public life.
Islam is a religion that has influenced the culture of its people in various ways, depending on the historical, geographical, and social context of each Muslim community. Islam is not a monolithic or static entity, but rather a diverse and dynamic tradition that has been shaped by different interpretations, practices, and interactions over time. Therefore, it is not possible to give a simple or general answer to how Islam affects the culture of its people.
However, some possible ways that Islam can affect the culture of its people are:
- Islam can provide a source of identity, values, norms, and ethics for Muslims, as well as a framework for understanding their relationship with God, themselves, others, and the world. Islam can also inspire Muslims to seek knowledge, wisdom, justice, peace, and compassion in their daily lives.
- Islam can influence the religious practices of Muslims, such as their beliefs in God (Allah), His prophets (Muhammad), His scriptures (the Quran and the Sunnah), His angels (malaikah), His decree (qadar), His judgment (qiyamah), His mercy (rahmah), and His wrath (ghayr). Islam can also guide Muslims on how to worship God through prayer (salat), fasting (sawm), charity (zakat), pilgrimage (hajj), and other acts of devotion.
- Islam can shape the cultural expressions of Muslims, such as their language (Arabic or other languages), literature (poetry, prose, history, etc.), art (calligraphy, architecture, painting, etc.), music (singing, playing instruments, composing songs, etc.), science (mathematics, astronomy, medicine, etc.), law (civil code based on Shariah), education (primary to tertiary levels), family (marriage and divorce), gender roles (men and women), food (halal and haram foods), clothing (modest dress code for women), sports (soccer is popular among Muslims), festivals (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are major celebrations), etc.
- Islam can affect the cultural interactions of Muslims with other groups of people who share or differ from their faith. Islam can foster dialogue and cooperation among Muslims across borders and boundaries. It can also promote tolerance and respect for diversity among Muslims within different countries and regions. However, Islam can also cause conflicts and violence among Muslims due to political or ideological differences. It can also lead to discrimination or oppression against Muslims by non-Muslims due to prejudice or ignorance.
These are some of the possible ways that Islam can affect the culture of its people. However, it is important to note that these are not exhaustive or definitive answers. Each Muslim community has its own unique history and culture that cannot be reduced to a single aspect or dimension. Therefore, it is better to learn about each Muslim community individually rather than generalize or stereotype them based on their religion alone.
